Everybody remembers their very first caramel waffle, or "stroopwafel" as we call it in Holland. Its delicious smell, that first bite: crunchy. Then, the syrup merges with the crispy cookie, especially if you have warmed it slightly on top of your cup of tea or coffee before eating. A stroopwafel is truly a feast for your palate.
A caramel waffel (sometimes also called caramel wafer or syrup waffle cookies) or simply "stroopwafel" is a Dutch cookie, consisting of a thin waffle cut in half with a special sweet syrup in between. After baking, the stroopwafel is cut in half and the syrup is smeared on. Then the other half is pressed on top. Enjoy their unique taste! Caramel waffles originate from Gouda, a city in the Netherlands, where they were first made in 1784. Traditionally, they were consumed at coffee and tea time. The stroopwafel is filled with a delicious sweet syrup and is an absolute delight with a cup of coffee or tea, but is also eaten on its own as a special treat. More than 200 years later, it is still Holland's most popular cookie.
