LiGa Was Founded in 1920s in Holland
LiGA was founded in 1920s in the Netherlands, when a number of industrial bakeries in Bergen op Zoom started working together and as it were formed a “league” (LiGA). In 1923, Theo Neutelings was Director of the business and was responsible for introducing the first pre-packaged LiGA Children’s Biscuits. Theo Neutelings had learned from doctors that the quality of supplementary feeding during the 1920s for children was inadequate. Therefore, there was a relatively high infant mortality. Theo realized that focus on producing a nutritious children’s biscuit could potentially become the specialty for LiGA. The foundation for the LiGA infant nutrition biscuit was to add additional food supplements (vitamins and minerals) which children’s were lacking, to its biscuits. LiGA’s children’s biscuits were marketed as complementary to a complement and balanced nutrition for babies and infants.
Nutritious And Responsible Biscuits
LiGA’s Kinderbiscuits (Children’s Biscuits) first came to the market in May 1923 and were the first pre-packaged biscuits in the Netherlands. The single packaged biscuits were filled in a box which not only was more hygienic but also gave the impression that it was a pharmaceutical product. The cardboard boxes were covered with a striking red color, clearly displaying the text and logo of LiGA Kinderbiscuits, an image of a smiling child and a suggested use manual written on it. Thanks to its distinctive packaging and quality nutritious biscuits LiGA Children’s Biscuits became an overnight success. The success of the children's biscuits formed the basis of further success of LiGA. In later years products like bread substitutes (Sanovite crackers in 1932), whole wheat biscuits (Evergreen in 1979) and more snacks and biscuits products (Oat Biscuits in 1983, now called Fruitkick, milk biscuits in 1985, now called Milk break). LiGA’s products are nowadays known healthy in-between snacks.
