Did You Know
Today, people in the Netherlands consume on average three cups of tea per day of which 60 percent would be a tea from Pickwick.
Pickwick shares the same heritage as the Douwe Egberts coffee brand in which both brands were established by the same company Douwe Egberts in 1753. In that year Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thijsses opened their store in Joure selling goods that came from all over the Dutch colonial empire. Until the First World War the shop sold a variety of exotic products of which coffee, tobacco and tea were the main sellers. Other products that the store sold included candy, sugar, rice, vermicelli, chicory, cinnamon, saffron, vinegar, chocolate and dried fruits. Back in those days, tea was sold as loose tea leafs in cones to keep at home in a tea tin and Pickwick was still known as Douwe Egberts Tea. Around the same time an American tea trader was providing tea samples to its customers in small silk bags. His customers thought these bags were so convenient in use when making tea that they did not removed these when brewing the tea. Thus, the tea bag was born.
Birth Of Pickwick
Douwe Egberts swiftly followed this exciting new development, and by 1937 introduced Douwe Egberts Pickwick tea. In search for a more "English" sounding name for the tea, it was the wife of the then CEO of the firm, Johan Hessel, that came up with the most suited solution. As a fan of the British writer Charles Dickens, she suggested the name Pickwick. She got the inspiration after reading Dickens’ novel "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club ". The company gained its popularity following the introduction of its now classic English Blend in 1957. This is anything but ordinary tea comprising of 25 different tea varieties. Pickwick’s continued success was stimulated by continuous innovations including wellness tea, green tea, rooibos, oriental flavored teas, iced tea, specialty tea leaves and introductions of new flavors such as tropical fruit, strawberry, lemon, berries, orange, cactus, melon, cherries, citrus fruits, mango, peach, cinnamon and vanilla. With one thing in all these years has remained the same: constant Pickwick quality.
