Van Gilse has a long history and is a typically Dutch brand. It all began in 1882, when the Van Gilse brothers started producing “kandij”, crystallized sugar lumps. In 1936, the company obtained sugar refining rights allowing it to manufacture white sugar, brown sugar, liquid sugar and syrups. In 1958, Verenigde Coöperatieve Suikerfabrieken (later known as Suiker Unie) acquired Van Gilse. In the years thereafter, under the ownership of Suiker Unie, Van Gilse expanded its product range even more.
