Netherlands vs Holland
Are The Netherlands And Holland The Same?
Often, the Netherlands and Holland are seen as one and the same. Their native language is Dutch and the residents of the Netherlands are also known as Dutch. However, the Netherlands and Holland are not the same; the Netherlands owns locations spanning across the globe, while Holland consists of just North and South Holland. The Netherlands is a country; Holland is not actually a country and those who reside in Holland are not called Dutch but are in fact known as Hollanders. Confused? Then read on.
Holland as a region is simple to understand. The Netherlands, part of Kingdom of the Netherlands, is made out of twelve provinces; only two of them – the Eastern coastal provinces of North and South Holland – combine to make Holland. The region known as Holland, which resides within the Netherlands, has the highest population of all the provinces. The other ten provinces are:
- North Brabant
Due to the economic power of North and South Holland in the 17th Century, the Netherlands was largely referred to by foreigners as Holland. This continued as Holland gained popularity as a holiday destination and earned a positive reputation as an accessible, friendly and hospitable region.
The Netherlands is far more complex than the region of Holland. The Kingdom of the Netherlands includes three other locations situated in the Caribbean founded by the Dutch Royal Family. These territories date back to the 17th Century when the Dutch wanted to claim as many ports as possible. The nations that remain to this day are Aruba, Curaҫao and Sint Maarten. Furthermore, the country of the Netherlands also stretches to three other cities within the Caribbean: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. The Caribbean portion of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Dutch cities there are all known as the Dutch Caribbean. Those who reside here are known as Dutch and European citizens and, despite not using the Euro as currency, they do vote in Dutch elections and maintain Dutch traditions.
To Sum Up:
Holland consists of two provinces within the Netherlands, whereas the Netherlands itself spans across the world.
